Brooklyn Museum 'Spike Lee: Creative Sources' exhibition wheatpaste poster in Brooklyn, NY by Beyond Street Media
What it is

On the building

A vinyl banner install is a printed panel mounted to a building face, construction fence, scaffold, or rooftop. BSM prints the banner, secures property-owner consent, files the municipal permits, and dispatches the install crew as one line item across 35 US cities. It is the headline format for spots where wheatpaste is not allowed and a billboard would run ten times the cost.

The brief

Who it's for.

  • You market a museum or cultural program and need an exhibition banner on the building face, the way the Brooklyn Museum ran its Mugler and Spike Lee shows.
  • You run sponsorship and route event branding to whichever city hosts the activation, like the FIFA World Cup 2026 banner work in Seattle.
  • You want one banner on a fence or storefront and need print, permit, and install handled together instead of stitched from three vendors.
  • You have an active renovation or development site and want to put the scaffolding or perimeter fence to work as paid surface.

  1. One line item

Print, property-owner consent, permit filings, and crew dispatch all run through BSM. There is no handoff between a print shop and a separate install vendor, because BSM prints and installs in-house.

  2. Material matched to duration

Short runs use 13-oz vinyl. Standard campaigns use 18-oz with reinforced grommets. Long runs use 22-oz UV-treated heavy vinyl on storm-rated mounting.

  3. Built for the surface

Building faces mount on grommet cable systems or masonry hardware. Fences cable-tie through the mesh, scaffold panels tension through the uprights, and rooftops sit on ballasted weight systems.

  4. Documented and clean

Every install gets a GPS-stamped photo, and BSM has 0 municipal removals on record.

The method

How it's made.

Scout and consent

We scout the placement and secure written property-owner consent for the surface. For fence-line and ground-level banners on private property, that consent is usually the only approval required.

Permit filing

Building-face and scaffold banners typically need DOT or city building-department sign-off. We file and track those filings across 35 markets, and permit fees pass through at cost with no markup.

Material and size spec

We spec the vinyl weight to the campaign length, from a 4x8 single panel up to a 40x80 building wall. Tall-building installs above the second story use wind-permeable mesh vinyl, which most municipal wind-load codes require.

In-house print

We print the banner ourselves in solid or mesh vinyl at full bleed. Print is included in the quote. Only outlier oversize substrates are quoted separately.

Surface-specific install

The crew mounts to the structure using the method the surface calls for: cable systems and masonry hardware on building faces, cable ties through fence mesh, wind-rated tensioning on scaffold uprights, ballast and edge hardware on rooftops.

Photo proof and removal

We send a GPS-stamped photo of the finished install, and removal is included in the program.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

Q · 01

Are vinyl banners legal?

Banner advertising is heavily regulated, and the rule depends on the surface. Building-face installs need property-owner consent plus city building-department or DOT sign-off in most municipalities. Construction-fence banners need GC or developer authorization plus jurisdictional review in cities like NYC and Chicago. Event-site fence-line banners on private property usually need only owner consent. We track per-city rules across 35 markets and confirm a legal install path before we quote.

Q · 02

What does a banner program cost?

Programs start at $5,000 for a single mid-size banner (10x20 to 20x40), with install, photo proof, and removal included. Building-face banners that need DOT or building-department permits sit at the higher end. Print is included in the quote, and a final number comes back in 24 to 48 hours based on size, location count, turnaround, and service mix.

Q · 03

How fast can a banner go up?

Seven to fourteen business days from approved artwork to up on wall in tier-1 markets. Small banners on private property with no permits can install in 4 to 6 days. Building-face banners that require DOT or building-department permits add 7 to 15 days for filing and sign-off. Rush installs at 72 to 96 hours are possible when print is press-ready and permits are pre-approved.

Q · 04

What sizes do you produce?

Anywhere from a 4x8 single panel to a building-scale wrap at 40 by 80 feet or larger. Standard sizes are 10x20 for storefronts and fences, 20x40 for a medium building face or scaffold panel, and 40x80 for a large wall or multi-story scaffold. Custom sizes for irregular surfaces are quoted per job.

Q · 05

Solid vinyl or mesh?

We print both. Solid vinyl gives full opacity for lower installs. Mesh vinyl is wind-permeable, prints cleanly at full bleed, and is required by most municipal wind-load codes for tall-building installs above the second story.

Q · 06

Do you handle permits and owner agreements?

Yes. Every quote includes property-owner consent paperwork and any municipal permits the location requires. Scaffold and building-face banners usually need DOT or city building-department sign-off, which we file and track, and permit fees pass through at cost with no markup. Most fence-line and ground-level banners need only owner consent, which we secure during the placement scout.
