Reverse stencil is one technique: lay a stencil on a dirty sidewalk, run a pressure washer through the cut-out at 2,000-3,000 PSI, lift the stencil, and your brand logo appears as a clean shape against the surrounding grime. Nothing is added. The image is the absence of dirt. As the city’s normal foot traffic and dust accumulation resole the surface, the mark self-erases over 2 to 6 weeks. The format is also called clean-tag advertising or reverse graffiti. The street is the campaign. No material deposited. No paint. No ink. No chalk. No adhesive.

What it is

Reverse stencil subtracts rather than adds. A wheatpaste poster deposits paper and paste. A sidewalk paint stencil deposits pigment. A reverse stencil removes the accumulated grime layer that the city has built up over months of foot traffic, vehicle exhaust, rain, and salt. The brand logo appears clean against the surrounding dirt. The surrounding grime becomes the background.

The format carries three industry names. Reverse graffiti is the original term, from independent artists in the early 2000s. Clean tag is the term city ordinance writers use. Reverse stencil is the operator term used by most agencies today. All three describe the same process: stencil pressed onto dirty concrete, pressure washer runs through the cut-out, logo is revealed as a clean patch.

Brands choose reverse stencil for three reasons. First: the legal profile. Because no material is deposited, most U.S. cities classify it outside paint-medium graffiti ordinances, which means lower permit friction and lower ordinance risk. Second: the press story. “The brand that washed its message into the sidewalk” reads as eco-positive and mechanically clever; earned-media pickup is stronger than any other stencil format. Third: the photograph. The before/after pair (dirty corridor to clean mark revealed) is the most shareable image in guerrilla advertising and gets recirculated by trade press and social long after the campaign ends.

How reverse stencil works

  1. Surface scouting. The make-or-break step. Reverse stencil only works on sufficiently dirty or weathered surfaces; clean concrete is a non-starter. Our route lead walks the target corridor (or pulls Google Street View plus crew confirmation) and grades every potential placement on a four-point dirt scale. We return a placement map with confirmed sites, alternates, and dead-zones before any production starts. Roughly 30–40% of any urban corridor is too clean for the format; the scout protects the entire brief.

  2. Stencil cutting. Reverse stencils are cut thicker than paint stencils to handle pressure-wash spray without flexing or tearing. Standard: 4mm aluminum or 60-mil mylar depending on run length and edge detail. Single-color marks ship in 2 days; multi-element layouts (logo plus type plus QR code) require one extra day for registration.

  3. Pressure-wash crew. Each install pair carries: 2,000–3,000 PSI portable pressure washer, 25-gallon water tank, placement manifest, photo SOP. Water only; no chemical agents or detergents. Pressure held at the lower end of the range to remove dirt without etching the substrate.

  4. Stencil set and run. Stencil is laid flat, weighted at the corners. Pressure-wash wand runs in slow consistent passes through the cut-out. A 36×36 mark sets in 90 seconds to 3 minutes depending on grime density. Lift the stencil, the mark is revealed, the surface air-dries.

  5. Photo SOP: the before/after pair. Signature deliverable. We shoot the wide-shot before (dirty corridor, no mark) and the wide-shot after (same frame, clean mark revealed) for every placement.
