Hand-painted signs are the medium that reads as real. A protester carries a hand-lettered plywood placard. A brand activates a storefront with painted A-frames and sandwich boards. Both signal craft and physical presence. Neither needs a permit.
Beyond Street Media keeps a working studio of sign-painters on-call across Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Miami, and eight partner cities, with rush capacity for protest moments (24-72 hours) and full-storefront treatments for brand launches. Clients range from political coalitions and nonprofits to retail brands opening their first location.
The craft
Hand-painted signs start with substrate choice. 1/2-inch plywood (sealed both sides, primed, lettered) works for outdoor protest, rally, and activation work because it survives rain, repeated handling, and stake-mounting. Corrugated cardboard runs single-use for biodegradable protest moments. Foam-core on wooden stakes handles indoor activations. Gessoed canvas and painted vinyl on rigid backing cover gallery, retail, and editorial environments where the surface reads as art.
Lettering is hand-applied. Painters work from artwork you supply (print-ready PDF, color-locked, scaled to substrate) using stencils, transfer paper, and Mack brush kits. For protest or rally moments where speed matters more than typographic precision, painters sketch in chalk from a written prompt, then paint to brief. The brushstrokes are the signal.
Photo documentation at every stage. Rough lay-in, color blocks, lettering, sealer, packing. For runs over 50 signs we approve a single sample then proceed. For live-painting activations, finished signs photograph against a neutral backdrop and deliver as a wrap-deck gallery within 24 hours of event close.
Where hand-painted signs win
Protest, rally, and rapid-response moments. Climate marches, labor pickets, political demonstrations, news-cycle moments. You need 50-300 signs 24-72 hours before the action. La Migración Es Natural ran 120+ hand-painted plywood placards through coordinated march days in LA. Hand-painted reads as community. Printed coroplast reads as astroturf.
Brand activation and pop-up storefronts. Streetwear drops, craft F&B openings, music venue residencies. Hand-painted A-frames on sidewalk, lettered sandwich boards, painted entry panels, painted plywood directional signage. The craft signals intentionality. The photo drives organic social.
Permits + compliance
Studio production requires no permits. On-site live painting at private venues runs on owner consent only. Public protest signage is the carrier’s responsibility, not BSM’s. Gallery + retail + editorial signage follows standard local storefront signage codes.

FAQ
Frequently asked.
Q · 01 What kinds of hand-painted signs does Beyond Street Media produce?
Protest and march signs (single-color stencil or hand-lettered, mounted on stakes or hand-held), political placards (campaign yard signs, hand-painted plywood, custom lettering), brand activation signs (pop-up booths, festival activations, store openings), and editorial signage (gallery openings, film premieres, music tours). All hand-painted in our studio or on-site by experienced sign-painters.
Q · 02 How fast can you turn around a batch?
Five to ten business days from approved artwork for runs of 25-100 signs. Rush 48-hour production is available for political or protest moments where timing is everything, call us by Tuesday morning for Saturday delivery. Larger runs (200+) take 10-14 days. We never silkscreen unless you specifically request it; the hand-painted look is the point.
Q · 03 What materials do you paint on?
Standard: plywood (1/2 inch, sealed, painted both sides), corrugated cardboard (single-use, for biodegradable protests), foam-core mounted on stakes. Premium: gessoed canvas, painted vinyl mounted on rigid backing, hand-lettered metal panels. Custom mounting hardware (stakes, brackets, hanging systems) handled in-house. We also paint directly on building walls, plywood hoardings, and event signage.
Q · 04 Do you do the lettering or do I provide the artwork?
Either. Provide print-ready artwork and we'll match your typography exactly using guides and stencils. Or send a written prompt and our sign-painters sketch + paint to brief, typical for protest moments, activation events, or anything where speed of decision matters more than typographic fidelity. We carry a working library of brush scripts, sans-serif block lettering, and three custom display faces for fast turnarounds.
Q · 05 Can you paint signs on-site at our event?
Yes. Sign-painter on-site is a common ask for store openings, brand activations, music festivals, and live-painting moments. We bring one or two painters with a working studio kit (paints, brushes, stencils, mounted plywood or canvas blanks), paint live during your event, and either gift signs to attendees or install on-site. Day rate covers a 6-8 hour shift.
Q · 06 What's the minimum order quantity?
Studio minimum is 25 signs for protest, rally, or activation runs. Single-sign commissions are available for editorial use (gallery openings, film premieres, one-off storefront placements) at a per-sign premium. Below 25 units, our crew cost dominates the line item, the per-unit rate is far better at 50-100 signs.
Q · 07 How is this different from hand-painted murals?
Murals are wall-scale, 20 to 60+ feet, painted in place over 3 to 14 days by a muralist with scaffolding access. Signs are hand-portable or storefront scale, 18 inches to 8 feet, painted in our studio or on-site over 6 to 48 hours by a sign-painter. Different scale, different timeline, different price tier. Brands often pair both for storefront moments (mural on the wall, hand-painted A-frame on the sidewalk). See our [hand-painted murals](/services/hand-painted-murals/) service for the wall-scale work.
Q · 08 Which cities have sign-painter crews on call?
Active studio access in New York City (Brooklyn studio), Los Angeles (Arts District workshop), Miami (Wynwood), San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington DC, Boston, and Portland. Out-of-market work ships from the closest studio with crew dispatched on-site for live painting. Rush production for protest moments routes through Brooklyn or LA depending on which coast the action is happening.
Q · 09 Do I see proof of every sign before delivery?
Yes. Studio production includes paint-stage photography (rough lay-in, color blocks, lettering pass, final detail) before sealer and packing. For large runs we email a single approved-sample photo, then proceed against that standard. For on-site live painting, finished signs are photographed against a neutral backdrop and delivered as a wrap-deck gallery within 24 hours of the event.
Q · 10 Can you handle protest or rally turnaround under 72 hours?
Yes. Our protest-rush pipeline is built for moments where news drives the timing. 48-hour turnaround on runs up to 100 signs, 72-hour on runs up to 250. Call by 11am Eastern on day one for delivery by end of day two or three. We hold pre-cut plywood, foam-core, and stake hardware in the Brooklyn and LA studios for exactly this scenario.
