· 01 · The brief

One format, worked hard across seven downtown corridors.

AEG Presents and Goldenvoice came back for a second Phoenix campaign inside a week, this one for the Red Clay Strays. Two hundred wheatpaste posters at 24 by 36, one format, worked across seven downtown corridors.

AEG Presents and Goldenvoice came back for a second Phoenix run inside a week.

The buy was 200 wheatpaste posters at 24 by 36 for the Red Clay Strays, one format start to finish.

The Red Clay Strays formed in Mobile, Alabama in 2016 and play country rock. This run went up ten days ahead of the band's September 17 date at Desert Diamond Arena on the Grateful Tour, the touring half of the album Grateful. The sheet carries the date, the venue and the support acts, Dylan Gossett and Sweet Talk, under the album title in gold script. AEG Presents and Goldenvoice, the promoter it owns, booked the street side of it.

One poster, repeated down a frontage

Boarded bays filled several at a time, so the same 24 by 36 sheet reads again and again along a single block.

· 02 · Where we ran it

Where we ran it.

The corridor list runs East Van Buren Street, East Jackson Street and West Jackson Street, North Central Avenue and South Central Avenue, South 1st Street and West Buckeye Road, all of it inside the downtown Phoenix core. Central Avenue and Jackson Street each show up twice on that list, north and south, east and west.

Three of those frontages had already carried the Johnny Blue Skies run that went up overnight on September 5, and the crew papered them again. The curved stucco corner at 900 North Central Avenue and East Garfield Street, the base of an automotive shop under a stop sign and a ONE WAY plate, took 12 sheets in a 6 by 2 block, layered torn flyers and a purple spray tag on the wall beside it. The mural corner further along, two painted figures under a rainbow arch with faded lettering reading TRADERS above them, took 16 in an 8 by 2 band across its base, one column wider than the run it followed. A white painted brick corner under partial red lettering reading Limo took about 20 on a single bay at uneven alignment, an orange and yellow paint strip at the ground still showing the word JAMESON.

The rest of the walls were fresh. A concrete wall under a small yellow ALCHEMY sign took 20 in a 10 by 2 run, glass-block windows above and a corrugated roll door at the right. A painted brick storefront took 16 inside a border of orange tape, plywood over the transom windows, exposed brick along the base, a parking meter standing directly in front of the block and a bilingual no-trespassing sign citing an Arizona statute on the wall beside it. Further out, 8 sheets sit in a 4 by 2 on a boarded bay set into beige cast stone, facing a vacant dirt lot behind chain-link with a palm tree and a traffic signal behind it. A tan warehouse wall by a corrugated service door and a yellow hydrant took 12 more, and 6 fill a 3 by 2 on the boarded bay of a derelict corner, its stucco peeling. A low band runs along painted brick within sight of a PHOENIX SUNS sign, downtown towers and a billboard with a frog on it.

The Johnny Blue Skies run put 350 placements in two formats across the same downtown. This one is one format for a different act at the same arena.

· 03 · What we ran

What we ran.

Each one carries a script Grateful over THE RED CLAY STRAYS, a support line reading DYLAN GOSSETT + SWEET TALK, a date line, DESERT DIAMOND ARENA and a white QR code, and that copy holds up from across a sidewalk. The install photography for this downtown Phoenix poster run shows the sheets going up in grids across boarded storefront bays, several bays filled at once.

Grid shape follows the bay. A plywood-boarded window on a yellow stucco wall took 4 sheets across its lower half, an NFPA placard above the board. A wider board under a corrugated awning took 10 in a 5 by 2. Under a covered storefront colonnade the crew worked two bays at once, the nearer one a 5 by 2, exposed brick between them carrying a painted figure and lettering ending in DCHILD. Repetition does the work a second format would otherwise do.

· 04 · The install

The install.

Photography starts at 8:57 on Monday, September 7 and the last frame is stamped 10:32, ninety-five minutes across seven corridors. Roadways sit empty in most of the frames. One catches a single pedestrian across the street and another an electric scooter lying near the curb. A third shows a row of arched bays papered over in plain white with a green highway sign and downtown towers behind them.

We logged 24 frames, and the 6 by 2 block on Central Avenue turns up from four standpoints in the set, which is what the wide, mid and detail process produces on a corner that reads differently from every approach.

· 05 · Booking a run like this

Booking a run like this.

Wheatpaste posters start at $3,500 on our published floors, and a scoped quote comes back in 24 to 48 hours. Standard lead time runs 5 to 7 days from approved creative in tier-1 markets, and expedited work goes up in 24 to 72 hours at 80 to 150 percent above standard. On hoarding, placements hold 8 to 12 weeks. We work 40 named US metros out of Brooklyn and reach all 50 states and Canada. Five hundred documented installs in, there is still no municipal removal on our record.

· 06 · Common questions

Common questions.

This one went up ten days out from the September 17 date at Desert Diamond Arena, which leaves the sheets working through the weekends before the show. Standard lead time is five to seven days from approved creative in tier-1 markets, so the booking lands roughly two to three weeks out. Expedited runs go up in 24 to 72 hours at 80 to 150 percent above standard.

Why paper downtown when the venue is in another city?

Desert Diamond Arena stands in Glendale, across the metro from the corridors we papered. The run went on blocks people walk on an ordinary day rather than the streets nearest the arena: East Van Buren, the Jackson Streets, Central Avenue north and south, South 1st Street and West Buckeye Road, all of it inside the downtown Phoenix core.

Can the same walls carry a second campaign?

Three of these frontages had already carried the Johnny Blue Skies run that went up overnight on September 5, and the crew papered them again. One of them took 16 sheets in an 8 by 2 band, a column wider than the run it followed. Surfaces that work keep working, which is part of what an embedded crew in a market is for.

Does a single poster format cover a 200-sheet run?

It did here. Every sheet is the same 24 by 36 black print, and the grid shape changes with the bay. A boarded window took 4 across its lower half, a wider board under an awning took 10 in a 5 by 2, a long painted bay took about 20. Repetition down a frontage does the work a second format would otherwise do.
